Siegfried had blown up the fire until the steel in the crucible was molten. He poured it into a mold and plunged the mold into the water trough. The water hissed and steamed as the steel cooled.

At the other end of the hearth, Mime had put his brew on the fire.

“The craftsman has turned to cooking,” said Siegfried derisively. He broke the mold, laid the glowing steel on the anvil, and began to hammer it. Again he plunged it into the water, then he began to fit it into a handle.

Meanwhile, Mime’s brew was finished, and he saw the Nibelung ring and the treasure hoard within his grasp. The despised gnome would be master of all. Men and gods would do his bidding while he toiled no more!

Siegfried had been shaping the sword with a small hammer. He spoke to the sword as if it were a living thing. “What once was shattered I have made anew. No stroke shall ever destroy you. Once you lay dead, but I have given you life again!”

He lifted the blade high. With a single blow he split the great anvil in two.

Mime fell to the ground in sudden terror, while Siegfried shouted exultantly and brandished the sword.
